Unrelated to Swine flu, but very interesting, super-sized Mimivirus has been photographed in great detail!

The Microbiowiki was originally created by students and their teacher in Provo and Brigham City, Utah between Jan and April 2008. It is currently being modified by new students. We are using Foundations in Microbiology, by K. Talaro, 6th edition (ISBN-13: 978-0073305400). If you have the 5th or 7th editions, that is fine. I will be posting messages to the students here on a regular basis. People outside of our class are also welcome to participate in this wiki. ~Kevin

This is an AWESOME video of a neutrophil chasing a bacteria! It gives you a new appreciation for the work your white blood cells do for you.

On a related note, here is an amazing video from Harvard showing the cellular mechanisms of how a white blood cell crawls along a blood vessel, responds to a chemical signal, and squeezes out between epithelial cells (diapedesis).

Here is another great video on the inflammatory response:
(See if you can name everthing flying by.)
  • Harvard has made available many short movies of bacteria moving. They are taken with fluorescence microscopy and you can really see the flagella well. Very cool!
  • Breaking News (12 Jan 09). Peanut butter recall in response to widespread Salmonella poisoning.
  • Experimental Evidence that sleeping more reduces your risk of catching a cold! The study concluded that "those who got less than seven hours of sleep a night were almost three times as likely to have clinical symptoms as those who got eight or more" (I typed this at 1 AM. Oops!)
  • Anti-bacterial soap...new findings suggest that it might not be as safe as we thought. Some of the chemicals found in it may affect sex hormones, interfere with the nervous system, and may even cause Autism in children. Click on this link to read the details! http://www.webmd.com/news/20080529/safety-debate-on-antibacterial-soap
  • Fighting a deadly Superbug....MRSA in hospitals, what medical personal can do to prevent the spreading of MRSA, proper techniques of disposing of gowns, gloves ect. (see also video of IMPROPER techniques I found on a You Tube video of Maggot Therapy-see Microbes in Media section for that video) http://www.comcast.net/data/fan/html/popup.html?v=1068838094
If you are in Logan or Brigham City, here is the link to Dr. Kaiser's Lab Manual, that we will be using (no labs in Provo). It's a pretty big file, so be patient with the download. You can save a copy on your computer and just print out the pages as you need them, or you could take the file to a printer and have the whole thing printed and bound. . . however you want to do it will end up cheaper than if you bought a lab book from a publisher. Thanks Dr. Kaiser for letting us use this!
There are pdf files of lecture slides posted on Blackboard. There are also lecture notes there (and at the bottom of this page).
You can find flash cards made by others or create your own at Flash Card Exchange. If you decide to create some flash cards, please post links to them on the appropriate pages here (ask me if you need help with this).
