Welcome! This is a website that everyone can build together. It's easy!
The Microbiowiki Homepage
Welcome!
May 2008. The Microbiowiki site was originally created by students and their teacher in Provo and Brigham City, Utah between Jan and April 2008. You are welcome to freely use and modify this site for your purposes, as we won't be using it for several months or more. The book we used was Foundations in Microbiology, by K. Talaro, 6th edition (ISBN-13: 978-0073305400), and that is what the chapter numbers refer to in the table below (chapter titles are given lower on the page). Let me know if you have any questions or if I can be of any help. ~Kevin
Lecture and Test Schedule
We will be covering most of the textbook, but will skip chapters 2, 10, 16, 22, and 23. For the most part we are going in order of the book except for chapters 18-21. These four chapters are about specific bacteria and the diseases they cause, and I decided to try spreading them out throughout the semester instead of hitting them all at once. Hence, there is one chapter per test section for the first four tests.
All tests are in class (and there is no lecture on test days). Plus, tests have been scheduled so that you always have the weekend to study. Not only that, but we have two holidays plus spring break! And, to top it off, I am planning on a class party towards the end! However, it is important to note that in spite of the festive party-mood, this is a fast-paced, challenging class. We only have one day of lecture for each chapter, and I expect you to come prepared. There will be a homework due before class about the chapter that will be talked about that day (with perhaps some questions about the prior chapter too). There will be 20 homework assignments, worth 10 points each (hence 200 points from homework). Working on this wiki site will count for 100 points. Test redos will count for 100 points. Tests will count for 600 points--your lowest test score will not be dropped. This makes for a convenient 1,000 points in the class, with exactly 60% of your grade coming from tests, 20% from homework, 10% from test redos, and 10% from working on the wiki pages.
Hey guys! I couldn't resist buying this cereal when I saw it (at Wal-Mart of all places!). Not only does it contain probiotics, which you know I am a fan of, but it has nearly half of your daily fiber needs, plus brocolli extract! It actually tastes better than it sounds. ~K
