Salma Hayek went to Africa with UNICEF. She's helping UNICEF raise money for a 79 cent immunization for the children of this community. She actually
gets to breastfeed a malnourished 1 week old child who is starving; it is so sweet. These women with children, their husbands discourage them from breastfeeding their babies because the men believe they cannot have sexual relations with a breastfeeding woman, so their children literally starve to death and also miss out on all the antibodies that breastfeeding gives a baby to survive. One immunization given to a mother will protect her unborn child and future children and give them immunity to tetanus. This is so sad, but it puts this horrible bacteria into perspective.
Sierra Leone has the highest infant and child death rate in the world.
One in five children die before reaching their fifth birthday and tetanus is a big contributor -- 21 percent of all infant deaths are related to tetanus. Check out
