I just keep checking the banner/transcript site on myusu. So far, it hasn't been posted there. It is the hurry up and wait game, but Kevin has 120 students to grade - it might take a moment. Hope this helps!

If a grade is not showing up in the USU system yet, that could indicate a problem and you should let me know about it. I created a real mess for myself by having some big-point assignments (such as wiki and lab books) due at the very end, but I still submitted grades before the deadline. For some people I have had to submit change of grade forms--these may take a couple of weeks to process. ~Kevin

RE: New info on the swine flu!
By: ,
May 1 2009, 10:24 AM EDT
"My husband just told me he heard the news say on TV yesterday that this swine flu epidemic has been traced back to a pig farm in a small town in Mexico. Does anyone know any more details on this?
" Yes that is true. The "patient zero" little boy, the one who they think was the first to catch this new strain of Swine Flu came from a small mountain town where there is a pig farm. People have been protesting this pig farm for its pollution ect. The pig farm, I believe, is totally the culprit!! They obviously don't have the safety protocol and rules that the US does! Who know how they are disposing of the pigs waste! Could be just tossing it into the street who knows!! I do feel this particular pig farm started it all, then with the poverty level of the surrounding towns contributed. I believe, and maybe Kevin could add to this, that people are dieing in Mexico because they are getting Swine Flu directly from the source! The strongest version. The only people that are sick in the US and around the world, are people who went to Mexico!!! I really don't think everyone needs to panic, just use common sense, wash your hands, cover your mouth when you sneeze ect! Until Mexico "cleans up their act" so to speek, this could get really bad for them (people still getting sick from the source!) But I really don't think we in the US have too much to worry about. Just stear clear of anyone who has traveled to Mexico!!! OH and just a FYI....YOU CAN'T GET SWINE FLU FROM EATING PORK!!!!! Man some people! Ha Ha!! It's kinda too bad we didn't hear about this a few weeks sooner! The discussions we could have had in class could of keep us from having to do the last two chapters!! HA HA!! Hope you all did well on your final!!

It isn't quarantined.... There are some countries that have banned all flights going to and from Mexico... And in Mexico they have made it so that restaraunts are only open for take-out or delivery. They are trying to reduce the chances of large groups getting together and spreading the swine flu. As far as I've read there is no quarantine YET

Kevin has talked quite a bit about probiotics in class, so I've looked in to it a little bit. It sounds like the verdict is still out in the scientific community about the overall benefits of probiotics, and research is ongoing. There is however mounting evidence that it can be beneficial in counteracting the growth of certain pathogenic bacteria, especially in the digestive system. Here is a link to the Mayo clinic website that gives some more good unbiased information. www.mayoclinic.com/health/probiotics/AN00389

Ulcers caused by bacteria

Peptic Ulcer Disease - Cause The two most common causes of peptic ulcer disease are infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria and use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Although many people are infected with H. pylori bacteria, only a few of them will develop peptic ulcer disease. Certain factors make a person with an H. pylori infection more likely to get an ulcer. Some of these factors, not all of which are well understood, include:
The use of certain medicines, such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or other NSAIDs. Smoking. Excessive alcohol use. Prior history of ulcers. Physical stress caused by a severe illness or injury (such as a major trauma, the need to be on a ventilator to assist breathing, or surgery). Most peptic ulcers that are not caused by an H. pylori infection are caused by the use of NSAIDs. NSAIDs may be prescribed to control pain or inflammation caused by long-term (chronic) diseases such as arthritis or headaches. When used for weeks or months, NSAIDs can damage the lining of the digestive tract, causing an ulcer or making an existing ulcer worse.
A rare cause of peptic ulcers is Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. In this condition, the stomach greatly overproduces acid, damaging the stomach lining.
Although there is no evidence to prove that emotional or mental stress causes ulcers, it does seem to make ulcers worse in some people. But the connection is still controversial. And there are no specific recommendations for using counseling or psychotherapy to treat peptic ulcers.

At work one of the thoracic surgeons talked about someone with Endocarditis. This patient was taken to surgery and the tricuspid valve was removed---without replacement! Apparently you can live for a time without one. The surgery is done for patients with valve infections so that they can heal from the infection before replacing the valve. I thought this was interesting and found an article about it. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1960998?ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DiscoveryPanel.Pubmed_Discovery_RA&linkpos=1&log$=relatedarticles&logdbfrom=pubmed

I saw that article too. Isnt it interesting that it said something about people with the gene mutations that can cause sickle cell disease have some protection against severe malaria? Maybe it shows the evolution of this gene mutation--- African Americans seem to have a higher risk for sickle cell AND malaria is a major cause of death in Africa.

Does anyone know if we just get the 50 points for setting up/planning a lab (or whatever you want to call it) with our lab groups? We didn't really have to do a lot so I was just wondering if we had to do something like write what we did for the lab to get the points. Hope this makes sense.

From what I have understood...those points are no longer in existence because there weren't labs for everyone to set up...if that makes sense. You might want to talk to Kevin to clarify but that is what I understood while speaking with him.
